Support mothers to breastfeed

8082013

NEW DELHI, 7 August 2013 On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August 2013), UNICEF organised an event to celebrate the work of women from the remotest parts of India, who have been working tirelessly to support mothers in breastfeeding.
The event brought together community champions (members of ᭯ther support groups and frontline health and nutrition workers) from different parts of India to share their experiences with media and technical experts on how they succeeded in their efforts to support mothers to breastfeed at critical times.
Welcoming the 㵮sung women heroes䬠Dr. Victor Aguayo, Chief of UNICEF IndiaⳠChild Nutrition and Development Programme said, I congratulate the women champions who have been able to overcome challenges and Reached out to mothers and their families in their homes, their communities, with correct breastfeeding information and support, at times when they needed it most.
In her keynote address, Smt Mrinal Pande, Chairperson, Prasar Bharati said, ㉠am really inspired listening to this group of women who have been able to do so much for their communities amidst such hardships. Given that India has rich traditions, it is always very effective to weave messages around breastfeeding through traditional ceremonies and by involving elders in the family. These women have been able to leverage this effectively
A UNICEF Nutrition Advocacy Toolkit bringing together evidence from UNICEFⳠpolicy programme and communication experience globally and in India was released during the event. The publication builds on the work by the National Coalition for Sustainable Nutrition Security and the Citizens⊁lliance Against Malnutrition and presents a collection of factsheets on essential evidence – based interventions to improve nutrition in children less than two years.

Global evidence shows that starting breastfeeding in the first hour after birth can reduce the risk of newborn death by up to 22 per cent by averting deaths related to sepsis, pneumonia, diarrhea and hypothermia. Evidence also shows that children who are exclusively breastfed are 14 times more likely to survive the first six months of life than non-breastfed children.
Community champions from UP, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand shared their experiences on community and facility based counselling, reaching the hard to reach populations and use of mass media to take ᢲeastfeeding support closer to mothers⮠
ቊhave prevented more than 100 families from following the traditional practice of giving honey to their newborns immediately after birth. I have been able to convince the families and ensured that every child gets motherⳠfirst milk,䊳aidUzma Arshi Qureshi, a breastfeeding counsellor from Madhya Pradesh. motherⳠmilk is every childⳠright,⠳tates Uzma.
Shobhna Patel, a community mobilizer from remote hamlets of Valsad, Gujarat supports pregnant tribal women with no access to healthcare to abandon age-old myths that are harmful to the health of the mother and the child. Through her repeated visits, she ensures that young mothers stop following practices like feeding the newborn honey or sugar and educates them on the importance of colostrum – motherⳠfirst milk.
㓩 I am a part of the Vasudhara Dairy Cooperative which helps women take care of their cows and get loans, women trust me. Certain practices like washing hands before breastfeeding and feeding the baby half an hour after birth must be followed䬠explains Shobhna.
The World Breastfeeding Week event provided an opportunity for members of media, government, civil society and academia to discuss the gravity of the problem of nutrition and recognizing the long-term impact of investing in promoting breastfeeding practices.
The key message was that breastfeeding should be initiated within one hour of birth and children should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life. The evidence presented during the event demonstrated that it is achievable through concerted efforts of all stakeholders in planning, counselling and communication.
Global evidence shows that more mothers breastfeed when they receive information, counselling and support in their homes and communities. This also reinforces the importance of frontline workers and mother support groups in helping mothers to breastfeed successfully.
㼢>Breastfeeding is not questioned, but its early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding remains a challenge. The message should be that Breastfeeding is best feeding䬠said Uzma.

The evening saw a well conducted ceremony with the presence of the various luminaries from the bureaucracy and cultural sphere.
Commenting on the book, Professor K Satchidanandan said, “Ms Sarma’s subtle ways of critiquing the society’s cant, the hidden greed and violence in human beings, the nuanced condemnation of patriarchy in its various crippling incarnations, has created a publication crafted with an ingenuous sense of structural balance.”

About the book:
Author and civil servant, Shubha Sarma’s ‘The Fly on the Wall & Other Stories’ is a rarity in today’s times- well written, concise stories with subjects set in diverse settings and places, ranging from up-market, urban milieu to the depths of rural Orissa and areas of civil strife and deep social unrest. The locales vary from deep forests of Odisha to the lush greenery of Assam and the fast-paced life in Delhi and Lucknow. The narrative strings together anxious house-wives, over-imaginative teenagers and men and women in the sunset of their lives. The characters are deeply etched and delineated. They are people one encounters everyday on the bus, the metro and the mirror. Each story is different, and each has characters etched lucidly as on ivory, situations that look so real in their contexts and strategies that enhance the fascination of the unfolding narratives. As a whole, this assortment of tales with a twist brings to life the realities and contradictions of India and makes it an enchanting collection of highly readable short stories.

Life Insurance Industry spearheads with “Customer Centricity”

8082013
Life Insurance Industry Spearheads with ‘Customer Centricity’ as Key Focus Area

  • Steady decline in Number of pending grievances to less than 1%.
  • Healthy increase in Renewal Premium to INR 1,79,831 crore as on March 31, 2013.
  • Total Payout to customers risen to INR 1,91,336 crore as on March 31, 2013.
  • 900%  phenomenal growth in AUM since opening up of sector.
  • 350% rapid growth in Inforce policies since opening up of sector.
  • 72% branches in rural and semi-urban geography.
Delhi, August 8, 2013:  The 24-Member Indian Life Insurance industry, the biggest retail financial service providers in India, with around 36 crore in-force policies, the largest in the world, and strikingly conscious of expanding rural footprint (more than 72% branches in rural and semi-urban geography) for inclusive growth, is now embarking nationally and spearheading the next big step to make ‘Customer Centricity’ a key focus area.
Life Insurance industry, riding on the growth path that has been spurred by product innovation and multiple distribution channels, is now making a concerted effort towards being Customer Centric in its approach by adopting Internationally accepted six principles –
¾  Increasing overall confidence – Embed TCF (Treat Customers Fairly) in corporate culture.
¾  Meeting Customer Needs – Products and services marketed and sold are designed to meet the needs of customers.
¾  Clear Information – Consumers are provided with clear information and are kept appropriately informed before, during and after the point of sale.
¾  Suitable Advise – Create awareness and inculcate behaviour in distribution for promoting Need Based Selling.
¾  Product Performance – Review of performance of funds.
¾  Post Sales Barriers – Continued focus on improving complaint management process.
To implement the above customer centricity initiatives, Life Insurance Council plans to carry out a Nation Wide Campaign. As a part of the campaign, Life Insurance Council is contemplating to request Members to provide training to its employees and use the TCF measures to motivate them to do effective customer service at all levels. TCF programme would be successful only if appropriate education is imparted to customers too, so that they could become responsible counterparties. Accordingly, we plan to organise customer meets as also training for intermediaries too, across the country to create synergies and build better understanding on the Life Insurance segment.
Mr V. Manickam, Secretary General , Life Insurance Council, the industry body of life insurers in India, said: “The Life Insurance industry would reinforce customer centricity at every step, be it creating awareness by improving financial literacy, need-based service & addressing effectively customer grievances etc. As a matter of fact, there has been an improvement in death claims settled by Life Insurers in terms of number of policies as also by amount in the past three most challenging years. There has been improvement in the time taken to settle death claims as well as the number of claims repudiated too has seen a significant drop. ”
“Currently life insurance penetration is 3.2% (2012-13) and life insurance density is 43$ (2012-13). By implementing the customer centricity initiatives we are confident that these would help in increasing life insurance penetration to 5% and density to 100 $ around 2020” Mr. Manickam further added.
Customer Grievance Redressal through Integrated Grievance Management System (IGMS) has been successful with no of grievances attended rising, and the number of pending grievances steadily declining to below 1%.
The Four-Pronged Regulatory changes in recent years have brought renewed focus on Customer Centricity - be it, protection-oriented like making sum assured at a minimum ten multiples, and offering guaranteed surrender value, or transparency-oriented like forming a policy-holder protection committee or making benefit illustration mandatory for all products, or even investment-oriented relaxing investment guidelines for exposure to infrastructure, or need-oriented like measuring product suitability matrix before making any recommendation.
The Life Insurance industry also witnessed spectacular growth in AUMs, with investments that have been targeted towards deployment of funds enabling infrastructure growth in the country. The AUMs of Life Insurers has risen to INR 17,41,175 crore as on March 2013 as compared to INR 1,94,010 crore in 2000-01 with a phenomenal growth of around 900%.
For the 11th Five Year Plan, Life Insurance sector has provided more than INR 7,25,000 crore as long-term funds for infrastructure development of the country.
While the Indian Life Insurance industry, which has immense growth potential compared to other countries, has witnessed a stable growth in total revenues over last two years, one of the most challenging period, there’s been a healthy increase in renewal premium to INR 1,79,831 crore as on March 2013, compared to INR 1,65,240 crore in March 2011. The in-force policies have also increased to 35.87 crore as on March 2013, compared to 32.54 crore two years ago and registered rapid growth of 350% compared to 1999-2000, when the sector was opened up for private sector participation. This signifies that increasing number of customers have reposed trust and confidence on the Life Insurance Industry.

The total benefits paid to customers by Indian Life Insurance industry in most challenging period, has increased to INR 1,91,336 crore as March 31, 2013 as compared to INR 1,41, 806 crore as on March 2011.

Radioactive water runs out of Fukushima

An aerial view shows workers wearing protective suits and masks work at a construction site (C) of the shore barrier to stop radioactive water from leaking into the sea at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on August 9, 2013. (Reuters/Kyodo)
The workers wearing protective suits and masks work at a construction site (C) of the shore barrier to stop radioactive water from leaking into the sea at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on August 9, 2013.
Radioactive water from Fukushima Leak caused by overflow: Contaminated groundwater accumulating under the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant has risen 60cm above the protective barrier, and is now freely leaking into the Pacific Ocean, the plant’s operator TEPCO has admitted. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) – the operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant – has started pumping out contaminated groundwater from under the facility. Having admitted that the groundwater has been mixing with radioactive substances seeping out of the plant, and then flowing out into the Pacific Ocean, TEPCO now hopes the pumping will reduce the leakage. While on Friday the company managed to pump out 13 tons of water in six hours, it plans to boost the amount to some 100 tons a day with the help of a special system, which will be completed by Mid-August. Japan’s Ministry of Industry has recently estimated that some 300 tons of contaminated groundwater have been flowing into the ocean daily ever since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that triggered the disaster.

NZ dairy giant’s Fonterra products recalled from Sri Lanka

New Zealand dairy company Fonterra has recalled two batches of milk powder under Sri Lankan government orders after allegations it contained traces of a farm chemical dicyandiamide(DCD), AFP reports. Sri Lanka’s Health Ministry said it considers DCD to be a “toxic chemical”, however Fonterra has denied its products contain it. Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal has temporary banned Fonterra advertising in the country until August 21, when test reports from foreign laboratories are expected, a court official said. This comes after Fonterra sent out an alert to its clients saying some of its products produced in May last year could be contaminated with bacteria that can trigger botulism.

India on Saturday activated the atomic reactor onboard INS Arihant – the first nuclear submarine solely designed and built by the country. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the development is a giant stride in the progress of India’s own technological capability. It also effectively means India will soon achieve the missing third leg of the nuclear weapons triad, and have the capability of firing nukes from the land, air and sea. INS Arihant, which is the first ballistic missile submarine built outside the five recognized nuclear powers (the US, Russia, France, Britain and China), will now head for sea trials, which will last for at least 18 months. While India plans to deploy the locally-built sub to its navy within two years, it also acquired a Russian Nerpa nuclear submarine for its navy on a 10-year lease from Russia last year.

Clashes in Northern Ireland

On Friday riot police dispersed a rally of Protestant loyalists protesting against an Irish Republican Catholic parade through Belfast, leaving 56 officers injured and 2 civilians. While preventing possible clashes between loyalist Protestants and Republicans, police officers encountered a barrage of bricks and bottles in the Royal Avenue shopping district, where Protestants blocked the route planned for the march by Catholic Republicans. The clashes eventually put five law enforcement officials into hospital, while 21 more were treated on site. The parade had to be redirected to West Belfast. The last time Protestants clashed with riot police was less than a month ago.

In the name of food security, UPA Government led by Congress drastically reduces food supply to BPL families

-         Gujarat CM objects on anti-poor provisions under NFSO by insensitive UPA Government led by Congress.
-         Narendra Modi writes to Prime Minister and Chief Ministers of various States on reducing food grain entitlement to poor.
-         Gujarat CM requested Prime Minister to convene a meeting of Chief Ministers of States on Food Bill.
Gandhinagar, August 13, 2013 : Under the National Food Security Ordinance (NFSO), issued by the UPA Government led by Congress, the food entitlements to the BPL families have been drastically reduced. According to the NFSO, the entitlement of BPL families has been reduced from 35 kg per family to only 25 kg per month to an average family of 5 persons. As is well known, it is the BPL families, which are most vulnerable and need adequate food supply at a subsidized cost in those remote areas and are not dependent on private merchants. In fact, more than 50% Scheduled Tribes population are under BPL and in those areas; access to food grains is a major issue. The BJP Governments in various states have set examples in public distribution system (PDS) and ensured 35 kg food grains to BPL families. In fact, the work done in Chhattisgarh and Gujarat, have been highly appreciated even by Hon’ble Supreme Court.
Reducing food entitlement to poorest of the poor cannot be the objective of any food security legislation. In fact, it is a cruel joke with the poor of this country. They have been promised food security and assured supply of 35 kg of food grain has been reduced to 25 kg. Gujarat Chief Minister objected very strongly to this reduction in the entitlement of those who have been identified as being below the poverty line.
The NSFO’s proposed pricing structure for the food grain adds financial burden on BPL families who now have to buy the additional food requirements from the open market. The BPL family will now have to incur Rs. 85 more per month in Gujarat to avail 35 Kg food grain.
The proposed entitlement also affects the required calorie intake of an individual. As per the Ordinance, the distribution of 5 kg food grains per month per person implies the supply of only 165 gm per person per day. Individuals involved in labour intensive activities require at least 2,500 calories per day. The entitled 165 gm grains would provide only 500 calories per day which is hardly 20% of one’s daily calorie requirements. Even in the Mid Day Meal (MDM) scheme, school going children are entitled to about 180 gm of food grain. As against this, an ‘adult food insecure person’ is proposed to be given only 165 gm for 2 meals per day. This does not address even the ‘calorific security’, not to talk about ‘nutritional security’, which is the main objective of food security.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Narendra Modi has expressed serious concern with the National Food Security Ordinance (NFSO) promulgated by the Central Government. He said the Ordinance does not fulfill the basic objectives of food security. In fact, this Antodaya card holders, who come under ‘poorest of the poor category’, this National Food Security Ordinance has no additional provisions to ensure food security.
Strangely, Central Government has come out with this Ordinance but in case, there is a shortage of food grain supply, it has refused to take any responsibility to ensure supply of the required quantity of food grains. Instead, this responsibility has been cast upon the respective state Governments to fulfill the shortage of food grains.
If there is drought and/ or States which are food grain deficit, State Governments will find itself in a very difficult situation to manage/ procure the food grains. Central Government with huge wherewithal could have taken this responsibility to make available the food grain during drought/ scarcity.
It seems that the Central Government is trying to take away the bare minimum from the BPL families. On one hand, the Planning Commission has been claiming reduction in the numbers of BPL families by redefining the parameters of a BPL family. On the other, those who still qualify as a BPL family will now suffer because of the NFSO. Strangely, number of beneficiaries has been fixed in the ordinance without specifying eligibility criteria and fix individual entitlements. Between different States, there could be wide regional disparities.
It is also surprising that the Central government chose not to consult any of the state Governments on the issue of NFSO. In a federal democracy, it is vital that the centre and the state Governments work in tandem with each other. In his letter, Shri Modi has pointed out that in the Ordinance, unworkable statutory responsibilities have been given to Central and State governments.
Gujarat Chief Minister has requested the Prime Minister to call a meeting of Chief Ministers as it concerns both Centre and State Governments with huge implications. The Chief Minister has also written to all the State Chief Ministers for a meeting on the same.
The insensitivity of the UPA Government has left very little for the states to decide. While some states have successfully provided food security to their people, the central Government fails to consult even these states for an effective food security ordinance.

With the Food Security Bill coming up for consideration in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Congress has issued a whip to its members in the House to be present and vote in favour of the legislation.

A discussion on the Bill in the Lok Sabha began on Tuesday but was scuttled by disruptions over Telangana issue caused by TDP members storming the Well.
UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who played a key role formulating and taking the Bill to Parliament, is likely to be the first speaker from the Congress in the debate in Lok Sabha on the subject.

Deviation in chopper deal: CAG

$

CAG slammed the Defence Ministry and Air Force on Tuesday, for "several instances" of deviation from rules in the procurement of VVIP choppers in the Rs 3,727 crore AgustaWestland deal.

In its report tabled in the Parliament, the Comptroller and Auditor General also questioned the decision of the then IAF chief to hold the trials of the two contenders for the deal abroad.
The CAG also noted that the benchmark cost of Rs 4,871.5 crore for the 12 VVIP choppers was "unreasonably high" as compared to the Rs 3,966 crore quoted by AgustaWestland.
"Several instances have been observed where the Defence Ministry deviated from the 2006 Defence Procurement Procedure and the tender for the deal issued in Sept 2006," the report stated.
As per the DPP, a reasonable price is benchmarked by the Contract Negotiation Committee (CNC) while proceeding with a deal.
But the benchmark price of Rs 4,871 crore arrived at by CNC was "unreasonably high as it had provided no realistic basis for comparison with the offered cost of Rs 3,966 crore (by AgustaWestland) for price negotiations," the report said.
The report added that while an approval for deviation was required to be pursued with "extreme caution and in exceptional circumstances", the frequent deviations made in this case are counter to the clauses of the DPP 2006.
The CAG also criticised the procurement of four additional choppers in the deal at a cost of Rs 1,240 crore as "avoidable" and said that the assessed requirement was not commensurate with the low utilisation levels of existing helicopters providing transportation to VVIPs.
On the evaluation of the choppers, the CAG said that trials for the AgustaWestland model were conducted on representative Merlin helicopters and not on the actual craft whereas the other contender, Sikorsky, had offered its S-92 for try-outs.
"Even at the stage of trials, the AgustaWestland chopper was in a developmental phase. Evaluation of helicopter following different methodologies could not give desired assurance that equal opportunity was provided to both shortlisted vendors.
"Thus, the recommendation and assurance given by the Chief of Air Staff in October 2007 to conduct trials abroad lacked justification," the report said.
The CAG also questioned the offsets obligations carried out by AgustaWestland, saying there was "ambiguity in the contract regarding the type of services and export orders to be executed by IDS Infotech (its Indian offsets partner)."
"AgustaWestland gave a year-wise break up of work from 2011 to 2014 to be executed by IDS Infotech under this offset programme even though the work had been completed well before the conclusion of the contract in 2010," the report said.
The Anglo-Italian firm had projected seven programmes to be completed as part of the offsets contract but "these allowed offsets were not compliant with the DPP. "Besides many Indian offsets partners selected for discharge of offsets obligations were not eligible," the CAG added.

Inaugural IBL kicks off today

Jwala Gutta-led Krrish Delhi Smashers will lock horns with Ashwini Ponnappa's Pune Pistons in the tournament opener of the inaugural Indian Badminton League (IBL) which kicks off in New Delhi on Wednesday.

It is expected to be a rollicking affair when the Indian and international stars clash with each other, playing high-octane badminton in the next 18 days to give the six franchises a chance to win the coveted title.
The opening ceremony will start at 6:30pm, which will have regular song and dance shows before the high-profile clash between Delhi and Pune begins at 8pm.
The USD one million IBL, which was affected by two postponements and a myriad of controversies, will begin at the Siri Fort sports complex, where star shuttler Saina Nehwal had clinched her Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2010.
A total of 90 matches will be played as the IBL bandwagon crosses six cities with each franchise hosting a two-day leg. The top four team will clash in the semi-finals and the winners will meet in the final on August 31 in Mumbai.
Jwala and Ashwini, who won India's first women's doubles bronze at the World Championship in 2011, will turn foes tomorrow when they led their respective teams.
Hosts Delhi boasts of Jwala as their icon player and the star doubles exponent is likely to pair up with one between the Malaysian world number two pair of Boon Heong Tan and Kien Keat Koo.
The Malaysian pair, who won the World Championships bronze and silver at Hyderabad and Paris in 2009 and 2010 respectively, is the biggest strength of the Delhi Smashers.
The format of the matches will be men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, men's singles and then mixed doubles, which means the onus will be on Jwala to take her team home in case her colleagues fail.

Radioactive water runs out of Fukushima

CM Modi Independence Day Address- A National Attention

By sagarmedia on August 15, 2013 | Edit
CM Gujurat Modi speech at Lalan College in Gujarat, why attracts people? empirically  he heads the main opposition party’s as the BJP campaign chief, hence the party with more than hundred senates and ruling various Indian states automatically makes the first politician of BJP who acts in void  space as the shadow PM of this nation.
It does not matter whether he will succeed to the throne but his attempt to be the defacto voice of the nation talking in terms of common man with pursuits of the delivery to the last man and his taking on head on interactive session with the Dr Singh the PM makes the despair people awake from slumber with glittering eyes focusing on Narinder Modi.
With his growing popularity in race with that of JP could bring BJP, a party with more democratic functions loaded with abundance of cadre. The saffron Party leaders feel the suave appearing leader underneath has the skin of strong dictator  which may bring gag to media as is their in few BJP ruled states and will allow some intellectuals, professional, corporate  to  fall in the coterie.
Most of the Nations are in peril because of strong nexus of politicians with selective few to construct their own empire rather than working for the common man has hit this luring greed India too. India  which is undergoing the worst fiscal crisis and leaders keep the people posted about global fiscal mismanagement is due to global crisis and not for inherent local reasons and in past they were  rhetorically  announcing Indian economy insulated from International trade. India the Nation famous for its  parallel black economy and wealth abroad the issue taken up by various activist does not find any heed. But Modi did raises the Q.
Narinder Modi the personality from the ordinary family, grass root worker of BJP has challenged the UPA government in the centre and took various silver bullet points to demolish the UPA ‘s dream of their plan to build better India.
Modi initiated his speech igniting to the concern of the President about the lack strong governance, Modi briefed that UPA has not been able to govern in dignity hence the President spelled his concern.
He further said most of the developed states in India are non UPA ruled.thus in process has lost faith of the people of India. UPA policies are burdening the states government and the surge of corruption, red tapism dynasty politician, aberration in governance deflected from constitution to self  has made the nation sick and lost the people faith. People and the nation need to get rid of arrogant leaders and UPA work in isolation   fail to bring consensus and hence nation looks for change, Modi  stressed with flair of slogans and this time not copying the leaders from abroad.
Modi’s concern about the nation, the people, policies and attacking the Congress in public domain is new change in Indian politics and when the two political brands of were looking two sides of one coin, people in private with warms are asking question, will there be a change ?
Next Q  will Modi the PM in waiting will ever be PM? are question consigned to future with its attributes in robes of saffron cadres, leaders and their collective skill to win friends in governance community.

Anti-government protests rock Bahrain

Police have used tear gas and birdshot to contain long-planned protests in the Gulf State of Bahrain. The country’s Shi’ite majority is demanding a greater say in the political decisions of the Sunni-ruled country. The long-planned protests mark two-and-a-half years since the unsuccessful uprising in the oil-rich state during which protesters called for the abdication of King Hamad, who has been in power since 1999.
Despite a ban on public demonstrations, throngs walked through capital Manama shouting “Democracy! Democracy!”, as police erected barriers and checkpoints through many of the main streets.

California high court refuses to halt same-sex weddings

California’s state supreme court refused to stop same-sex weddings on Wednesday in a one-sentence order. The court’s response was prompted by supporters of a 2008 gay marriage ban known as Proposition 8, who had appealed after the US Supreme Court ruled back in June against an appeal following the law’s repeal by a San Francisco federal judge. The legal wrangling has been ongoing since the gay marriage legislation was passed by voters in California, later ruled unconstitutional. Two days after the US Supreme Court ruling in June, a federal appeals court allowed gay marriages to resume in California, and a wave of ceremonies began immediately. Andy Pugno, an attorney for a pro-Proposition 8 group called ProtectMarriage.com, said the state Supreme Court’s ruling “leaves grave doubts about the future of the initiative process in our state.”

14 killed in twin road blasts in Iraq

Twin roadside bombs in Baquba, Iraq have killed at least 14 people and injured 26, police announced. The first bomb exploded near a café while the second one hit an ice cream shop, both in the centre of Baquba, 65km north of Baghdad. The blasts follow a series of attacks across the country during the holy month of Ramadan. Al Qaeda has claimed responsibility for similar attacks in the past week.

Navy chief DK Joshi briefing media on INS Sindhurakshak submarine

The blast happened on the INS Sindhurakshak around midnight and was shortly followed by a massive fire. The sailors on board the submarine reportedly managed to jump off to safety, but more than a dozen are feared trapped inside the hull. The vessel partially submerged after the fire. Several people have reportedly been rushed to hospital following the incident.Fire brigades were battling the blaze for almost three hours to prevent the fire spreading to other vessels docked nearby. There was no immediate comment on the status of the sunken submarine’s torpedoes and other weapons.

“Lot of things are in very close proximity, there is fuel, there is hydrogen, there is oxygen, there are weapons with high explosives on board,” retired Indian navy chief Arun Prakashs said. “So a slightest mistake or slightest accident can trigger off a huge accident.”

The INS Sindhuratna, which was docked close to the Sindhurakshak, was pulled away to safety.

Although it’s believed that the explosion onboard the Indian submarine was likely an accident, an investigation was launched to establish the exact cause, the navy said.

INS Sindhurakshak submarine,on 4 June 2010, the Indian Defence Ministry and Zvezdochka shipyard signed a contract worth US$80 million to upgrade and overhaul the submarine. After the overhaul, it returned to India from Russia between May and June 2013. A fire broke out aboard Sindhurakshak while the vessel was in Visakhapatnam in February 2010. One sailor was killed and two others were injured. Navy officials reported that the fire had been caused by an explosion in the submarine’s battery compartment, which occurred due to a faulty battery valve that leaked hydrogen gas. After the fire damage in 2010, Sindhurakshak was sent to Russia for a two and a half year refit, overhaul and upgrade. In August 2010, Sindhurakshak arrived at the Zvezdochka shipyard in Russia. The submarine was modernised, repaired and retrofitted under Project 08773, and after the upgrade the sea trials started in October 2012. The upgrades included improved electronic warfare systems, an integrated weapon control system and a new cooling system, and were expected to extend the service life of the submarine by ten years. The Club-S (3M54E1 anti-ship and 3M14E land attack) missiles, USHUS sonar, СCS-MK-2 radio communication systems and Porpoise radio-locating radar, and other safety-enhancing features were incorporated. The submarine was handed back to the Indian Navy on 27 January 2013, after which it sailed back to India, under Commander Rajesh Ramkumar. This was the first time an Indian submarine had navigated under ice condition.

A day of crisis,14 August 2013, the Sindhurakshak sank after series of explosions caused by a fire onboard when the submarine was berthed at Mumbai. The fire, followed by a series of ordnance blasts on the armed submarine, occurred shortly after midnight. The fire was put out within two hours. It is unclear exactly what caused the fire. Due to damage from the explosions, the submarine sank at its berth with only a portion visible above the water surface. Sailors on board reportedly jumped off to safety. Navy divers were also brought in as there was a possibility that 18 personnel were trapped inside. Defence Minister A. K. Antony confirmed that there were fatalities.

Due to the explosion, the front section of the submarine was twisted, bent and crumpled, and water had entered the forward compartment. Another submarine, INS Sindhuratna, also sustained minor damage when the fire on Sindhurakshak caused its torpedoes to explode. Official sources said it was “highly unlikely” the submarine could be returned to service.

INS Sindhurakshak incident as a “catastrophe”, Navy chief Admiral D K Joshi on Wednesday indicated there was little hope of survival of 18 personnel on board the submarine, which exploded and sank at the naval dockyard.

“We hope for the best and are prepared for the worst,” he told reporters at the Western Naval Command headquarters. He, however, said three other sailors, who were on the “upper casing” of the submarine when the tragedy occurred, survived, sustaining “only minor injuries”.
“They have been discharged (from the hospital),” he added. “Miracles do happen… There may be some air pocket or some may have got access to breathing sack,” he said when asked if there could be survivors among the 18 including three officers.
Responding to a query, the Navy chief did not rule out the possibility of a sabotage but said indications at this time do not support such a theory.
“A board of inquiry has been ordered which will bring out all the details,” he said. The inquiry is expected to be completed in four weeks.
“We do not have answers to what caused the fire,” he said, adding “There are several ingredients (on a naval vessel) that contribute to or cause fire, including explosives, fuel, oxygen bottles. “We hope to determine what caused this catastrophe,” Joshi, who accompanied Defence Minister A K Antony to the naval dockyard, said.
“So far, the Navy divers have been able to open the main hatch,” Joshi said when asked about the rescue efforts, but added “there has been no communication with the staff inside, regrettably.”
Of the 18, two officers and six sailors were married, the Navy chief said.
The submarine had undergone extensive refurbishing in Russia last year and had over 1000 hours of diving after that, he said.
To a query about the submarine being involved in a similar accident when it was docked in Visakhapatnam in February 2010, the Navy chief said, “there is no connection between the two incidents.”
“We are unable to point out our fingers at what could have gone wrong,” he said. The fire was preceded by a a smaller intensity explosion, he said.
“We are gathering forensic evidence,” he added. Joshi said three other personnel who were on board the vessel but not inside, were too shocked to make a statement.
Divers were looking for the missing personnel, but without any success so far, he said.
Earlier, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, who accompanied Antony, said the state government has kept the J J hospital here on standby to treat the injured.
He expressed “deep sympathy” to the Chief of Naval Staff and families of the affected personnel on behalf of the Maharashtra government “in this hour of tragedy”.

Submarine sinks after serial blasts, 18 navymen still missing
In one of the worst disasters to have struck the Indian Navy, a series of explosions rocked its submarine INS Sindhurakshak at the dockyard in Mumbai around midnight, sinking it partially in the shallow sea, in which 18 personnel including three officers are feared killed.
A smaller intensity explosion was followed by two massive blasts, causing a major fire in the Russian-made submarine, Admiral D K Joshi, Chief of Naval Staff told reporters after visiting the dockyard in Colaba.
Joshi, who accompanied Defence Minister A K Antony, did not rule out the possibility of a sabotage but said, “Indications so far do not support such a theory.”
The diesel-electric submarine was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1997 at a cost of around Rs 400 crore and had gone through a Rs 450-crore extensive upgrade in Russia under a contract signed in 2010.
The warship rejoined the navy on 29th April, this year. It was fully armed at the time of the mishap, navy sources said.
With the 18 navy personnel still missing nearly 17 hours after the mishap, Joshi said, “While we can hope for the best, we have to be prepared for the worst.
“Miracles do happen. There might be air-pockets (to aid their survival). We know that so much time has gone by,” he said.
Joshi said three other personnel who were on board the vessel but not inside, jumped to safety but were too shocked to make a statement.
A board of inquiry has been constituted to probe the reason behind the blasts and it is expected to submit its report within four weeks, he said.
Divers from the navy, Joshi said, have been able to cut through the vessel, as all hatches had fused due to the fire, and were looking for the missing personnel, but without any success so far.

Leading international medical aid agency Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has ceased all operations in Somalia, closing 11 separate sites, following persistent hostile actions from radicals. “The closure of our activities is a direct result of extreme attacks on our staff, in an environment where armed groups and civilian leaders increasingly support, tolerate, or condone the killing, assaulting, and abducting of humanitarian aid workers,” said MSF president Unni Karunakara. The president said that 300,000 people had been treated by MSF staff this year alone. Upon the release of the news the Islamist Shebab group stormed one of the organization’s compounds and took all property belonging to the MSF.

BP files lawsuit against US government for enacting ban on new business

BP has filed a lawsuit against the US government following a ban on new federal contracts for the oil company, enacted after the company plead guilty to charges stemming from its 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the largest spill in American history. In November of 2012 the US Environmental Protection Agency cited BP’s “lack of business integrity” in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon incident that left 11 workers dead, and millions of barrels of oil spread into coastal waters. Though the suspension only impacts new contracts and not existing ones, BP has argued in its suit that the ban causes the company “irreparable harm.” BP has incurred about $42.4 billion in charges related to the April 20, 2010 oil spill, reports Reuters. “We believe that the EPA’s action here is inappropriate and unjustified as a matter of law and policy, and we are pursuing our right to seek relief in federal court,” said Geoff Morrell, BP’s head of U.S. communications.

Hundreds killed in Egypt violence, month long state of emergency proclaimed
A state of emergency was declared on Wednesday after Egyptian security forces violently broke up sit-in camps of Muslim Brotherhood supporters in Cairo. Officials say at least 281 have been killed nationwide.Four journalists have been killed in violent clashes which swept Egypt on Wednesday, with a number of the press core suffering serious injuries in the clashes. At least 238 civilians died in total as security forces brutally broke up pro-Morsi rallies. Egypt has been swept by horrific street violence, showers of gunfire, blazing fires and tear gas as relentless clashes have shaken cities in government attempts to break up the demonstrations.
Among the 238 protesters killed were children, including the 17-year old daughter of a Muslim Brotherhood official. Police stations were torched or stormed by pro-Morsi groups amid the ruthless government suppression.
The violence also took the lives of Sky News cameraman Mick Deane and Dubai-based XPRESS journalist Habeeba Abdelaziz. Both had been covering the pro-Morsi protests in Egypt’s capital which security forces began to ‘disperse’ earlier in the day.
Deane, 61, was shot as he was documenting the turmoil in Cairo. Despite receiving medical treatment for his injuries he died shortly afterwards, according to a statement from Sky.
An undated handout picture taken at an undisclosed location and released by Sky News on August 14, 2013 shows Mick Deane, TV cameraman for Britain’s Sky News who was shot and killed while covering violence in Egypt on August 14, 2013.
“He was an astonishingly good cameraman, took some brilliant pictures,” said John Ryley, head of Sky News.
Habeeba Abdelaziz was a 26 year old Egyptian reporter from Dubai, who worked for XPRESS – a ‘sister’ publication to the country’s Gulf News.
“It’s hard to believe she’s gone. She was passionate about her work and had a promising career ahead,” XPRESS Deputy Editor Mazhar Farooqui told Gulf News, commenting that the entire team was in a state of shock.
Abdelaziz had been covering protests near Cairo’s Rabaa al-Adawiya Mosque, which has been the site of one of the largest protests for over a month, and a subsequently heavy-handed crackdown by governmental security forces. They reclaimed the area late on Wednesday.
The third journalist killed was Egyptian Ahmed Abdel Gawad of Al Akhbar newspaper. He died while covering the clashes  at Rabaah al-Adawiya. The Egyptian Press Syndicate, a journalist union, confirmed Gawad’s death, but did not provide any details.
The fourth reporter to have been confirmed killed is photojournalist Mosab El-Shami Rassd of the news website (RNN), an alternative pro-Islamist media network, Ahram online reports. The agency wrote that he “was killed by the hand of betrayal while covering the Rabaa massacre at the hands of those who executed the coup,” wrote the network on its Facebook page.
Reuters photojournalist Asmaa Waguih also suffered serious injuries after being shot in the leg during protests. Shortly afterwards, she was moved to the international medical center to receive treatment. The Committee to Protect Journalists has released a statement on the issue, saying that the group condemned the killing of Sky News cameraman Mick Deane, prior to hearing of the second death.
“We call on Egyptian authorities to issue clear orders to security forces to respect the right of journalists to work freely and safely while covering events in Cairo and the rest of the country,” said CPJ Deputy Director Robert Mahoney.
“The killing of Mick Deane underscores the urgent need for such action and for all sides to show restraint and allow the media to do their job. The authorities must investigate all attacks on journalists and hold those responsible to account,” he said.

Other journalist were also treated for wounds. An AP photographer was hit in the back of the neck by two birdshot pellets, while Al Jazeera claims its cameraman Mohammed al-Zaki was shot in the arm. In addition, Paris-based Reporters Without Borders says that Tarek Abbas — a reporter for local Al-Watan newspaper sustained gunshot wounds to his leg and eye; and photographer Ahmad Najjar was wounded in the arm.
Approximately a dozen other journalists were arrested or threatened as they tried to document the mayhem: Reuters’ Tom Finn tweeted his own arrest. Daily Beast reporter Mike Giglio also said on Twitter he was arrested alongside two photographers named Mahmoud Abou Zeid and Louis Jammes, stating they had been beaten too.
A state of emergency was declared on Wednesday after Egyptian security forces violently broke up the sit-in camps of Muslim Brotherhood supporters in Cairo. Health Ministry officials say that over 2000 were injured in the nationwide violence, alongside the 278 who were killed including policemen.
“The dead are both from police and civilians,” said the ministry’s spokesman, Hamdi Abdel Kari.
Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad claimed that as many as 2,000 people had been killed and 10,000 injured in the police operation.
Security forces succeeded in gaining control of the protest camps by the end of the day after turning the capital into what journalists called “a war zone”. A state of emergency has been declared and curfew imposed in major cities including Cairo, Alexandria and Suez. The curfew is set to last for the next month – or until further notice.
The dawn of  Wednesday , Egyptian police sent in armored bulldozers to break up the protest outside Rabaa al-Adawiya in eastern Cairo, where one of the Muslim Brotherhood camps is located. Police  broke up a second protest site outside the Cairo University campus in Giza in the city’s west.
Helicopters were circling over the protest sites, using loudspeakers to call on the demonstrators to leave. Security troops used tear gas against protesters, and there were also reports of intensive gunfire in the area.
Protesters are also accusing the military of ordering snipers to shoot at them from the rooftops of buildings surrounding the sit-in camps.
“It is nasty inside, they are destroying our tents. We can’t breathe inside and many people are in hospital,” protester Murad Ahmed described the camp crackdown.
Police and military forces had previously cordoned off the camps with barbed wire, leaving corridors for protesters to leave.

They’ve got every road blocked off and are firing at anyone trying to get in: tear gas, birdshot bullets and what sounds like live ammo.
The army soldiers shot pro-Morsi activists in the legs who tried to join the Rabaa protest camp. Some of the supporters of the ousted president threw stones and petrol bombs at the troops, the news agency said.
Egypt’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that Morsi supporters who attempted to remain in the protest camps would face prosecution.

Himmat Singh Rai emerges triumphant at Jamega Tour event in England

15082013
Bristol, England, August 14, 2013: IndiaⳊHimmat Singh Rai emerged triumphant at a Jamega Tour event at The Players Club near Bristol in England on Tuesday. Rai shot scores of 66 and 71 to end up with a total of three-under-137 at the par-70 course. James Ruth (66-72) of England finished one stroke behind Rai in second place.
The strong field at the 36-hole event included players from the European Tour, Challenge Tour and Asian Tour. The victory gave Himmat his fourth professional title. He also has an Asian Tourtitle to his credit.
Himmat posted a four-under-66 to be the joint leader in round one along with the English duo of James Ruth and Dan Osbaldeston. RaiⳠopening round included seven birdies and three bogeys.
The 26-year-old Himmat showed the patience that was required on a difficult and windy second day as he reeled off nine straight pars on the front nine to remain at four-under for the tournament and lead by one.
Ruth then snatched a great birdie from the difficult, short 10th hole to once again get on level terms with Rai, who then counterpunched with birdie on the 12th to once again move one shot ahead.
Rai tripped and stumbled after his birdie on the 12th and proceeded to bogey the 13th and 15th but fortunately for him Ruth also bogeyed the par-5 15th and so the pair were still tied with two holes to play.
The turning point came on the 17th hole when Rai hit a super second into a tight pin to birdie whilst Ruth dropped a bogey-5 to fall two shots back with one to play.
A little drama ensued up the eighteenth when Rai could only reach the front of the green in three shots while Ruth had a very makeable birdie putt from around 10 feet.
Rai putted up stone dead and marked, leaving Ruth to try and hole his to force a playoff but his effort looked into the hole but refused to drop and so Rai tapped his in to be a worthy winner.

Egyptian security forces crack down on Morsi supporters,

15082013 Naresh:
As Egyptian security forces crack down on Morsi supporters, Human Rights First’s Brian Dooley is in Cairo meeting with human rights activists. With Brian’s help, we’re posting updates on the situation in Cairo on Twitter @humanrights1st and we’ve provided recommendations to the United States government on how to better promote human rights in Egypt.
Here’s the latest from Brian:
It’s 8:00 PM here. Egyptian security forces have cleared the smaller sit-in at Nahda but there is still fighting at the larger encampment at the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque. Casualty estimates vary wildly. Morsi supporters are claiming 1,000 dead and 10,000 wounded, including many women and children. International media outlets report more than 100 fatalities, mostly (not all) men.
Getting around much of the city is now dangerous. Downtown Cairo is very quiet with few people on the streets, but many neighborhoods are unsafe and there has been shooting between security forces and gunmen. Trains and main arteries into Cairo have been stopped to prevent protestors from the rest of the country from entering the city.
The military is solidifying its coup by installing governors across the country and has declared a month-long State of Emergency, which is all too reminiscent of Mubarak’s three decades of authoritarian rule. Curfew begins at 9pm and will last until 6am.
Churches and police stations are being attacked in various locations across the country by Islamist militants in revenge, and there has been a fresh wave of attacks on Coptic Christians.
Here’s what the Egyptian human rights activists I’ve been talking with tell me:
  • Along with the security forces, the Muslim Brotherhood has a responsibility to do what it can to quell the violence. Amnesty International’s report of torture within the camps and reports of protestors firing at security forces show that the sit-ins weren’t entirely peaceful. Still, the security forces’ assaults on them are collective punishment.
  • Today, the U.S. State Department could help provide clarity about what’s actually happening on the ground by releasing information on casualties and the scope of the violence gathered by the Embassy in Cairo.
U.S. government aid to the military should be suspended after today’s violence. The resumption of military aid should be conditioned on the implementation of a credible program of national reconciliation in Egypt, and the empowerment of an inclusive, civilian led government with control over the military and security forces.
Human Rights First has been working to make sure that human rights promotion is at the center of American policy toward Egypt. Read our Blueprint on how the U.S. government can promote human rights in Egypt and follow us on Twitter @humanrights1st for the latest news from Cairo.
Sincerely,
Sharon Kelly McBride

Indian divers find two bodies of sunken submarine

16082013

Indian navy divers have found the bodies of two out of 18 sailors inside a Russian-built submarine that sank after it exploded in a Mumbai dockyard, a navy spokesman said. The explosions reportedly took place in the INS Sindhurakshak’s forward section, where torpedoes and missiles are stored. There appeared to be no way the sailors could have survived the intensity of the blasts and fire in what is the Indian navy’s worst submarine accident since the 1971 war with Pakistan

India Signs Loan and Project Agreements with World Bank for US $100 Million for Low Income Housing Finance Project
The Loan and Project Agreements for World Bank (IDA) assistance of US $100 million for Low Income Housing Finance Project were signed between Government of India/National Housing Bank(NHB) and the World Bank here yesterday.
The Loan Agreement was signed by Shri Nilaya Mitash, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance on behalf of Government of India and Mr. Michael Haney, Operations Advisor of World Bank (India) on behalf of the World Bank. The Project Agreement was signed by Shri R.V. Verma, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) on behalf of National Housing Bank (NHB). Representative(s) from NHB and officials from the Finance Ministry and World Bank, among others, were present.
The Objective of the project is to provide access to sustainable housing finance for low income households, to purchase, build or upgrade their dwellings.
The project will have three components which are
• Financial Support for Sustainable and Affordable Housing for NHB to, directly or indirectly through Qualified Intermediary Institutions, refinance low income housing loans made by QPLIs to Primary Borrowers to purchase, build or upgrade their dwelling;
• Capacity Building of the National Housing Bank (NHB), Qualified Intermediary Institutions, and Qualified Primary Lending Institutions (QPLIs), and • Project Implementation
Expected results to be achieved at the end of the project include an increase in – o the number of primary lenders active in the low-incomesegments, o volume of loans to lower income borrowers, and o the number of borrowers in these segments.
Financing under the project aims to create incentives for lenders to focus on lower income households through a net all-in reduction of the lenders’ cost of funds of approximately 200-300 basis points.
• The project also aims to deliver on its stated objective of reaching a higher proportion of lower income households while maintaining portfolio quality standards. The project expects to develop prudent lending standards to serve the more vulnerable, lower income households, expand the coverage of credit bureaus to include informal income borrowers, develop consumer information and disclosure norms for the project’s target groups, enhance the appraisal capacity of the lenders, as well as pilot new policies and products to overcome the challenges of dwelling informality.
It is a financial intermediary loan for an implementation period of 5 years. NHB is the implementing agency

16082013

IBL ON DAY 2:HYDERABAD ADVANCE

AUGUST 16, 2013 BY SAGARMEDIA.
Badminton in India has its own share of up and down but with more player at international level Indian Badminton is improving as years pass but  still has to achieve its peak.
The game well explained as its inherent strength is “Badminton by Dance and Cricket by Chance”.
On watching game on TV screen Indian players are yet to get to excellence of international repute as players must possess insurmountable stamina to cope up with foreign counterparts and their defensive, aggressive, precision in both strategy, drops, cuts, cross court smashes and drop commands, spin the shuttles at nets, deceptive drops and shots are the major ingredients to which the players must demonstrate with ease.
However the Indian Badminton league is step forward and  lover of the game looks forward for players whose style and play is treat to which with magnanimity all out an effortless player is for on exploration.
Indian badminton ace Saina Nehwal stamped her authority with a dominating win over P V Sindhu as Hyderabad Hotshots notched up a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Awadhe Warriors in the inaugural Indian badminton League in New Delhi on Thursday.
Hyderabad allowed Warriors to lock the tie 2-2 after taking a 2-0 lead but Pradyna Gadre and Shem Goh V sealed the contest for Hyderabad by winning the deciding mixed doubles.
Coming into the make-or-break match, Pradyna Gadre and Shem Goh V recorded a 21-9 19-21 11-8 win over Markis Kido of Indonesia and Thailand’s Sapsiree Taerattanachal.
Touted as the biggest match of the day, the women’s singles clash between Saina and Sindhu turned out to a one-sided affair as the London Olympics bronze medallist registered a 21-19 21-8 win over Sindhu, who looked a pale shadow of her fighting self which has earned her the title of a giant slayer.
Saina has not won a single title this year and also failed to win a medal at world championship after having a troubled stomach but she tamed her fast rising compatriot after some initial tough moments.
She recovered from a slow start to dominate the proceedings against Sindhu, who broke into the world top 10 in the latest.
India’s top shuttler Parupalli Kashyap suffered a straight-game defeat against lower-ranked Vladimir Ivanov but Tai Tzu Ying brought Banga Beats back into the contest against Mumbai Masters with a hard-fought victory over Tine Baun on Thursday.
World number 14 Kashyap could not quell the challenge from the 41st ranked Russian, losing 18-21 18-21 in the first mens singles at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.
However, Taipei’s Tai Tzu stunned three-time All England Champion and 11th ranked Tine 21-17 21-18 in the womens singles match to level the tie 1-1.
Kashyap was leading in the first game and had a healthy 7-2 lead at the break but Vladimir turned the tables on him at the second interval, moving to 14-12.
Although, Kashyap clawed back at 15-15 and moved to 18-18 with a smash but Vladimir pocketed the next points to grab the advantage.
In the second game, Kashyap played an attacking game and opened up a 7-2 lead at the first break but Vladimir made it 8-9 with some attaching stroke-play.
Vladimir fought back brilliantly but the Indian was able to keep his nose ahead at 14-10.
Kashyap got points with his sharp angled smashes but he also committed few unforced errors as Vladimir kept breathing down his neck even after the break.
Kashyap lost a few points at the net and also failed to handle his rivals smashes to allow him to level par at 18-18.
But a couple of miscued shots and Vladimir was just one point away from a stunning victory.
The next point too went Vladimir’s way as Kashyap had no answers to his smash.

IBL: Delhi Smashers beat Hyderabad Hotshots

Delhi Smashers made a superb comeback after trailing 0-2 at one stage as they defeated strong contender Hyderabad Hotshots 3-2 in the inaugural Indian Badminton League (IBL) in Lucknow on Saturday.

The Smashers rode on the strong performance by their men’s and mixed double teams to register their first victory in the tournament.

After being locked 2-2, it was their mixed doubles pair of V Diju and Prajakta Sawant who finally took Delhi home after they defeated Hyderabad’s V Shem Goh and Pradnya Gadre in the last match of the tie.

Earlier, Sai Praneeth of Smashers suffered a 21-19 19-21 7-11 defeat to Thai player S Tanongsak in the first men’s singles to allow Hyderabad a 1-0 lead.

The second game was played between ace shuttler Saina Nehwal of Hyderabad and Arundhati Pantawane of Delhi. Though Arundhati initially troubled Saina, but with her powerful smashes, the London Olympics bronze medallist won the game 21-6.

Saina continued her dominance in the second game and defeated Arundhati 21-8 to give Hyderabad a 2-0 lead.
However, world number two Malaysian pair of Boon Heong Tan and Kien Keat Koo kept Delhi’s hopes alive when they defeated V Shem Goh and Kona Tarun of Hyderabad 21-14 21-10 to reduce the lead by 1-2.

The fourth match was played between Taufik Hidayat and Malaysian Darren Liew, but the former World and Olympic champion was off colour and lost 10-21 7-21 as Delhi bounced back into the contest, making it 2-2.

Making a good start, Darren maintained the momentum throughout the match. He displayed a good performance in the second game too and dominated the proceedings with his strong smashes.

Diju and Prajakta then took the court against V Shem Goh and Pradnya Gadre.
The Hyderabadi players, which won the decisive game against Awadh Warriors in the last outing, failed to recreate their magic and lost the first game by 21-20.

In the second game, Smashers maintained their dominance and won by 21-15 to bring cheers to the Delhi camp.
