Col. PM’s Statement on Energy at G20 Summit

17112014
Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today expressed India`s support for a new global standard on automatic exchange of information, which would be instrumental in getting information about unaccounted money hoarded abroad and enable it`s eventual repatriation. He was making an intervention during the G20 session on Delivering Global Economic Resilience. He said he supported all initiatives to facilitate exchange of information and mutual assistance in tax policy and administration.
Noting that increased mobility of capital and technology have created new opportunities for avoiding tax and profit shifting, the Prime Minister said he urged every jurisdiction, especially tax havens, to provide information for tax purposes in accordance with treaty obligations.
The Prime Minister reiterated his call for close policy coordination among major economies, saying this is important not just for also addressing the challenge of black money, but also for security issues like terrorism, drug trafficking, arms smuggling etc. He said although all countries have their domestic priorities, coordinated decisions would “help us all” in the long run. He said the resilience of the global financial system will also depend on cyber security.
• Increased access to affordable, assured and clean energy supply for all should be our primary goal. It is a major economic opportunity for all countries.
• Let us make an ambitious and innovative effort to make renewable, especially solar energy, competitive with conventional energy. In Gujarat, the canal-top project worked well and saved water, too.
• Pricing of carbon, especially in mature markets with universal availability of power, can stimulate shift to renewable energy.
• Let us increase our collective R&D efforts and collaboration; and, ensure dissemination to all countries. For this, I would propose that we set up a global virtual centre for clean energy research and development, with adequate public funding, which will fund collaborative projects in diverse sources of clean energy, smart grids, energy efficiency, etc. India and the United States have built an excellent virtual centre on a bilateral basis, with matching public and private funding. We can select a team of outstanding experts to evaluate and judge research projects. The results should be available to all countries.
• We should also discuss innovative funding models to ensure rapid expansion of renewable energy in decentralised manner in rural areas.
• In countries like India, there are vast opportunities for those wishing to invest in clean coal technology, since our dependence will not reduce very soon.
• Nuclear energy can still be a safe, reliable and clean source of energy. It will be an important part of our mix.
• Energy efficiency is the best source of clean energy. In India, for example, building energy efficiency and efficiency in areas such as buildings, household appliances and industrial goods is receiving strong attention. I invite you to come and invest in this sector in India.
• I also believe that change in lifestyle and economy in consumption will be the most enduring response to energy challenges.
• G20 can be effective in promoting an integrated the natural gas market, ensuring freer trade in gas and ensuring that the markets operate more efficiently.

Mumbai City FC eyeing a win and ISL top spot

17112014
Mumbai: Mumbai City FC will look to find their scoring touch and three full points when they take on FC Goa in the Hero Indian Super League encounter at the D.Y. Patil Stadium on Monday evening.
The team, co-owned by Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor and Chartered Accountant Bimal Parekh, have maintained a clean slate in their last four games though having also failed to score in their last two away encounters.
One of those encounters were against the visitors, where both teams fought for midfield superiority and failed to break the opposition defence.
However, the home support and conditions could play a big factor on Monday as the hosts aim to win all remaining hom points available with an eye on a semi-final berth.
Mumbai City FC have 11 points from eight outings so far and have three more home games, including the one on Monday, to play as the battle for the top four slots hots-up.
As things stand now, all the eight teams have a chance to reach the semi-finals and only two points separate Mumbai City FC from table toppers Atletico de Kolkata. A victory on Monday could see the host take pole position in the overall standings for the first time in the tournament.
But for that to happen, coach Peter Reid knows that the forward line has to fire again and it would be interesting to see if the Englishman makes any changes to his starting XI, after having tweaked his formation only due to injuries in the last few games.
At the Pre- Match press conference Mumbai City FC’s Assistant Coach Steve Darby commented “Players don’t like being beaten and it just doesn’t help morale, so it is important to stop getting beaten. We have done that and we have had four clean sheets in a row. I think there’s been a lot of nil-nil draws going on in the League, so it’s a sign of a mature League”
“I can categorically say that Freddie is not playing. The others are all in contention. Everyone else, 26 players are all fit but Freddie is not ready yet. We go for a win every game, honestly. Our view is we don’t give anything away. We have people like Anelka, possibly Moritz who can score. That’s the realistic… We are told there will be a good crowd, a lot of tickets sold. It does help, the crowd, honestly.
Tiago Ribeiro at the pre-match press conference commented “We have ensured that the gaps we have had earlier in the League, we have closed them. We are communicating better on the field and we started working as a unit. That’s changed over the last few matches”

ABOUT THE EVENT
The absence of an effective multilateral mechanism in South Asia has withheld any purposeful convergence in the region. SAARC, the only regional forum available, continues to be plagued by regional rivalries and trust deficit and is yet to attain the vibrancy demonstrated by several regional arrangements in other parts of the world. This is despite the forum possessing enormous potential for cooperation in cross-cutting sectors to foster well-being of the people in the region. The upcoming SAARC Summit in Kathmandu in November would provide the Indian leadership an opportunity to further its vision of regional integration and infusing dynamism in the forum. The public session will have outstanding experts who will discuss new ways of enhancing connectivity across the region, promoting regional trade and investments and addressing the security concerns and hence create a vibrant SAARC forum.

Has China’s Economic Shift Really Ended the Commodity Super-cycle?

New Worldwatch Institute analysis examines global commodity price trends and China’s role in shaping global markets

Washington, D.C.—-The most recent economic “super-cycle,” a decades-long trend of rising commodity prices, has been influenced by the surging growth of China since the turn of this century. Now, as China begins its shift from an export-led growth model to a model based on internal investment and consumption, the super-cycle has slowed. Despite this shift, however, commodity prices suffered a notable drop in 2013 but remained high compared to historical averages, suggesting that the super-cycle may have been and continues to be driven by other substantial global factors, write Worldwatch Institute’s Mark Konold, Caribbean Program Manager, and Jacqueline Espinal, intern with the Climate and Energy Program (www.worldwatch.org).
Commodities markets are composed of physical goods and raw materials that are bought and sold in large quantities on exchanges around the world. Global commodities markets fell an average of almost 9 percent in 2013, continuing the 2012 slowdown of the most recent super-cycle. Critical commodities groups-including energy, metals, and foodstuffs-are closely watched as a bellwether of the overall commodities market.

Since introducing environmental targets to reduce carbon emissions, China has been diversifying its energy sources. However, recent price stability in the oil market continued in 2013, despite uncertainty regarding output from conflict-stricken producers such as Iraq and Libya. Further, widespread use of fracking technology, although contentious, has significantly reduced the price of natural gas. So while China may have affected global energy markets, many factors may be playing a role in determining overall prices.
Metals prices continued their recent downward trend, sliding 33 percent since 2011. Last year, gold saw its biggest annual drop since 1981. China’s economic rebalance was supposed to usher in lower demand for imports, including metals like copper and iron ore. But an additional 260 million rural citizens are expected to relocate to urban areas in China, which will sustain a higher need for such resources. Geological factors and higher energy prices, the latter being a main input for metals production, also have contributed to this sustained price level.
Despite a 7.1 percent drop in 2013, food prices remain at historic highs. In China, environmental strain has led to increased imports of wheat, corn, and rice to support a growing population. Although this does affect global markets, it appears that a wider range of factors is keeping food prices up, including high demand for livestock feed, renewable fuel standards (supporting fuels that rely heavily on agricultural products as inputs), declines in global buffer stocks, and policy choices such as export bans in some regions. Further, increasing extreme weather events due to global climate change have negatively affected agricultural yields, exacerbating high prices.
Clearly, China’s choice to become a more consumer-driven rather than an export-driven economy has affected areas such as energy, metals, and food. However, data from all countries continue to suggest that more than just one factor creates a “super-cycle,” as price levels remain significantly higher than they have been in decades past.

No dilutions in Land Acquisition Act 2013 and Forest Rights Act

20112014
People’s Movements in Odisha write to the Governor, demanding no dilutions in Land Acquisition Act 2013 and Forest Rights Act

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi, 19th Nov 2014: Several people’s movements from Odisha gave a memorandum to the Governor Mr. S.C Jamir to register their protest against the attempts by the Central Government to dilute the Right to Fair Compensation, Resettlement and Rehabilitation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act 2013 and Forest Rights Act. In the memorandum, they strongly asserted that the news of proposed amendments in two of the key provisions, ‘;consent’; and ‘;Social Impact Assessment’; of Land Acquisition Act 2013, is completely unacceptable to the people’;s movements, and that these two provisions are central to addressing the issue of ‘;forced land acquisition’; and ‘;resulting impoverishment’ to the communities. People’;s movements representatives also said that it would be a retrograde step if we were to go back to the colonial process of forced land acquisition and no regard to its impact on people, environment and democratic institutions. Any move to dilute pro-people laws for corporate and political gains is undemocratic and unacceptable, and people’;s movements will resolutely fight against that.

To                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Dt.19.11.2014

            Shri. S. C Jamir
            Honourable Governor of Odisha
            Bhubaneswar

Respected Sir,

Since, the time NDA government has come to power on various occasions its Ministers Shri Arun Jaitley, Shri Nitin Gadkari, Shri Piyush Goyal and others have advocated for bringing amendments to the “Right to Fair Compensation, Resettlement and Rehabilitation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act 2013”. NDA is considering bringing amendments to the Act in the Winter Session of the Parliament or even an Ordinance to make significant changes to the Act. We know that the new Act has been framed after consulting all the stake holders and over a period of seven years after going through two Parliamentary Standing committees (2007 & 2009), both headed by senior BJP leaders, Shri Kalyan Singh and Smt. Sumitra Mahajan.

The new Act was a response to the Colonial Land Acquisition Act, 1894 which resulted in forcible land acquisition without any resettlement and rehabilitation, drastically affecting not only people who lose their land, but also those who lose their livelihood. These forced land acquisitions led to massive protests in places like Nandigram, Singur, Kalinganagar, Kakrapalli, Bhatta Parsaul, where many people died. For years  Narmada Bachao Andolan, Niyamgiri Suraksha Parishad, Anti SEZ protests in Raigarh, Jhajhar had been demanding a repeal of the colonial act and enactment of a new development planning act marking people’;s participation and provisions for livelihood based  R&R. Finally, we have an Act, passed by last Parliament and rules for which have been notified by NDA government in August 2014.

The new Act has not even been fully implemented in earnest by either State or Central government, but a climate is being prepared by them that new Act is an impediment to the developmental needs of the country.

The news that two of the key provisions, ‘;consent’; and ‘;Social Impact Assessment’; of the Right to Fair Compensation, Transparency in Land Acquisition, resettlement and Rehabilitation Act, 2013 is to be amended by the NDA government is completely unacceptable to the people’;s movements. These two provisions are central to addressing the issue of ‘;forced land acquisition’; and ‘;resulting impoverishment” to the communities.

We are writing to you  to convey the Govt. Of India with utmost urgency on this issue. You must be aware of the intense struggles going on in various states across the country including Odisha around the issues related to land acquisition, displacement, development plans and projects. The farmers, fish workers, labourers, artisans, facing uprootment from not just their socio-cultural environs but also livelihoods, are compelled to get united and raise their voices against unjust displacement.

Non-violent, peaceful and democratic organizations and their alliances are questioning forcible acquisition of land and everything attached to land, including minerals, ground water, as well as habitats, tree cover and common property resources that result in pauperization, more often, without rehabilitation.

It is in this context that the Right to Fair Compensation, Resettlement and Rehabilitation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act 2013 need to be implemented.

It will be a retrograde step if we were to go to back to the colonial process of forced land acquisition and no regard for impact of land acquisition on the people, environment and democratic institutions which need to be consulted and their consent taken in the process of SIA. If we are to truly respect the rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution then Parliament must work towards the following :
  1. Let the provision of Consent for the public purpose projects also be made mandatory for the government projects too.
  2. We need to limit the definition of the ‘;Public Purpose’;. Infrastructure doesn’;t equal development. We have seen how Reliance Industries has been creating infrastructure for nation, they work for profit alone and in the process loot the citizens and arm-twist the government, prime example being Delhi and Mumbai Metro and KG Basin Gas projects  ?
  3. We must have mandatory Social Impact Assessment provisions for the irrigation projects as well, given the huge displacement, in case of Sardar Sarovar dam the sword of displacement is hanging on 2.5 lakh people even after three decades.
  4. Urgently establish a National resettlement and Rehabilitation Commission to deal with the grievances of 10 crores of people who have sacrificed their land and livelihood in the process of development.

We would also like to bring to your notice that the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the 13th and 14th Lok Sabha, had given its unanimous report that is self-explanatory. Some of the prominent recommendations included :

  1. No forcible land acquisition for private corporations.

  1. Free prior informed consent of project affected people, not land losers alone, for every kind of project, including government one, contrary to what is there in the current Act, 80%  and 70% consent of land losers for private projects and PPP projects respectively. (Even this is not acceptable to NDA government, what a shame!)

  1. No acquisition of agricultural land for any project to be covered under the new Act.

  1. Role of Gram Sabhas, Basti Sabhas in Social Impact Assessment, R&R and in other processes emphasized.

The Proposed amendments to the new Act are against the transparency, accountability and democratic participatory planning of development projects with people whose resources are to become the capital, indispensable. Any such effort by the ruling party must be defeated.

We would also like to point out that, 13 Central Acts which are used for the land acquisition, need to brought under the coverage of the new Act by January 2015 and NDA government should work towards that.

In order to ensure that all this happens, the only way forward, is that government implement the 2013 Act and no amendments are made to the ACT. As esteemed Members of Parliament we want you to intervene and bring your party to understand that the current move to amend the Act is anti farmer and anti people.

Therefore, we on behalf of National Alliance of People’s Movements of Odisha unit like to urge you to take up our appeal on above matters to the Central Government and initiate appropriate action so that the State Government implement sincerly Forest Right Act & Land Acquisition Act 2013.

With warm regards,

Yours Sincerely

Shankar Das takes flight with a seven-under-65, leads by three

20112014
Mr._S_S_Bapat__ED__CC___Branding___IOCL__does_the_ceremonial_tee-off_to_inaugurate_the_IndianOil_Servo_Masters_Golf_2014

Digboi, Assam, November 19, 2014: Shankar Das of Kolkata fired a blistering seven-under-65 in round one of the IndianOil Servo Masters Golf 2014 to open up a three-shot lead at the top at the Digboi Golf Links. Abhinav Lohan of the DLF Golf & Country Club, Gurgaon, was in second place at four-under-68.

The tournament was inaugurated on Wednesday morning by Mr. S S Bapat, Executive Director, (CC and Branding), IOCL and Mr. Barun Barpujari, Executive Director (IC), Assam Oil Divison, IOCL. Mr. S S Bapat’s ceremonial tee-off was followed by the release of pigeons and balloons. Mr. Bapat and Mr. Barpujari also planted trees on the course to mark the inauguration of the event.

Shankar Das, a two-time winner at Digboi in 2010 and 2011, was quick off the blocks as he struck a purple patch with five straight birdies from the 11th through the 15th. The 30-year-old, currently second on the Rolex Rankings, set up eagle opportunities on the 12th and 14th thanks to two brilliant drives, one of which found the green. Shankar however, narrowly missed eagles on both occasions and had to settle for birdies.

A couple of accurate wedge shots helped Das gain two more strokes on the 11th and 15th. His longest putt of the day was the 15-footer for birdie on the 13th. A bogey on the second was a minor setback as Shankar roared back with birdies on the fifth, seventh and ninth.

“I always do well at this venue. So I had the confidence coming into this tournament. I struck the ball really well and also played some good chip shots. The birdie-spree early on helped me raise my game further. I set up three eagle opportunities but couldn’t take any of them. The most disappointing was missing the two-feet eagle putt on the seventh,” said Shankar.

He added, “I’m eager to do well here this week since it can help me become number one in the Rolex Rankings. I also want to make up for last year when I didn’t fare too well at Digboi due to a back injury.”

Abhinav Lohan holed three long-range birdie putts and came up with two well-executed chip-putts for birdies. He had a lone bogey and thus closed the day in second place with a 68.

Lohan, looking for his maiden title, said, “I had a couple of low scores last week at Shillong, but ended the tournament with an ordinary 74. I feel I’ve got back my rhythm with today’s round. A sharp short-game will hold the key at this course and I feel I did well in that area today.”

The six players who took a share of third place at three-under-69 were Delhi’s Shamim Khan, Kolkata’s Nur Hossain Sardar, Vishal Singh of Jaipur, Lucknow golfer Sanjay Kumar who won at Shillong last week, Bangalore’s C Muniyappa and Karan Taunk of Jamshedpur, the current leader in the Emerging Player of the Year race.

Nur Hossain Sardar, playing only his second event of the season, came close to making a hole-in-one on the 16th where his tee shot stopped one foot from the flag.

Karan Taunk made five birdies on the trot from the 11th through the 15th during his opening round.

Raise your voice with UNICEF and Imagine a better world for children

20112014

UNICEF invites aspiring pop stars to join Hugh Jackman, Katy Perry, Ang鬩que Kidjo, Priyanka Chopra, Yoko Ono and David Guetta to sing John Lennon’s Imagine and help raise awareness of children’s rights

NEW YORK, 20 November 2014 – During a musical event at the United Nations General Assembly today, UNICEF will unveil the #IMAGINE project as part of celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The #IMAGINE project brings together artist Yoko Ono, renowned music producer and DJ David Guetta, UNICEF Ambassadors – including Katy Perry, Ang鬩que Kidjo, Daniela Mercury, Priyanka Chopra, Yuna Kim – and a host of other high profile supporters with the aim of creating a unique moment in music history that will highlight the tremendous challenges children face the world over.

A new interactive digital experience, powered by TouchCast, will allow everyday people to record their own version of Imagine, John Lennon’s iconic anthem of hope and peace, alongside their favourite stars, in what UNICEF hopes will be the largest ever global sing-along.
These individual recordings, and those of UNICEF’s Ambassadors and other artists, will be made into a multi-lingual ‘world’ version of Imagine, produced by David Guetta. Everyone who records the song has the chance to have their vocals and videos used in the new UNICEF version of Imagine and in the accompanying interactive music video, created by TouchCast and TheBridge.co – both of which will be released in the lead up to New Year’s Eve 2014.
“The Convention on the Rights of the Child asked us all to imagine a better world for children – and calls on all of us to make that vision a reality,” said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. “The #IMAGINE project gives people across the globe a chance to join a global movement for children, lending their ideas, their visions and, not least, their voices to advance the rights of every child, everywhere.”

#IMAGINE participants can share their own recording of Lennon’s classic song with friends and family on social media and encourage others to perform Imagine too. They can also record personal messages describing what they imagine a better world for children would be like.

“A dream you dream alone may be a dream, but a dream two people dream together is a reality,” said Yoko Ono.

Participants will also have the opportunity to donate to UNICEF. Funds raised through the #IMAGINE project will support the organisation’s programmes providing education, nutrition, healthcare and immunisations, clean water and sanitation, protection and emergency relief for children in more than 150 countries and territories.

“I’m really excited to be working with UNICEF on this incredible new project. Our ‘world’ version of Imagine will be like no other – I am proud to be a part of this collaboration,” said Guetta. “We have to get the word out that every voice counts and every child counts too.”

The event at the United Nations General Assembly will include live performances by Grammy Award winner Ang鬩que Kidjo, Brazilian singer-songwriter Daniela Mercury, Swedish-Iranian pop sensation Laleh, cellist Trey Lee from Hong Kong, Nigerian musician Don Jazzy and Kristian Kostov, the winner of the Russian The Voice.

Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning actor Hugh Jackman, Yoko Ono and Bj沮 Ulvaeus from ABBA will also make special appearances during the event.

The #IMAGINE digital experience will be available via the TouchCast app for iOS on the App Store on 20 November or at http://imagine.unicef.org

‘Lithuania President’s remarks worse than Ukrainian radical nationalists’ – Russia

She also urged support for the Kiev government, including providing military aid.

Tunisians elect first president

23112014
Tunisians elect president for first time
Tunisians vote on Sunday in their first presidential election since the 2011 revolution that sparked the Arab Spring, a ballot set to round off an often fraught transition to democracy.
Among the 27 candidates, the hot favourite is former premier Beji Caid Essebsi, an 87-year-old veteran whose anti-Islamist Nidaa Tounes party won parliamentary elections last month.
Others vying for the presidency include outgoing President Moncef Marzouki, several ministers who served under former dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, leftwinger Hamma Hammami, business magnate Slim Riahi and a lone woman, magistrate Kalthoum Kannou.
Some 5.3 million people are eligible to cast ballots, with tens of thousands of police and troops deployed to guarantee security amid fears Islamist militants might seek to disrupt voting.
In most of the country, polls open at 8:00 am (0700 GMT) and close 10 hours later.
However, voting will be limited to only five hours in some 50 localities close to the Algerian border, where armed groups are active.
A run-off vote will be held at the end of December if no one secures an absolute majority.
Until the revolution, Tunisia knew only two presidents — Habib Bourguiba, the “father of independence” from France in 1956, and Ben Ali, who deposed him in a 1987 coup.
To prevent another dictatorship, presidential powers have been restricted under a new constitution, with executive prerogatives transferred to a premier drawn from parliament’s top party.
Essebsi has run on a campaign of “state prestige”, a slogan with wide appeal to Tunisians anxious for an end to instability.
Supporters argue only he can stand up to the Islamists who first held power in the post-Ben Ali era, but critics charge he is out to restore the old regime, having served under both former presidents.
Marzouki has been hammering home the argument that he is the only leader capable of preserving the gains of the uprising, and has said today’s vote is the “last stand” for the old guard.
Moderate Islamist party Ennahda, which came second in the legislative election, has not put up a candidate and has invited its members “to elect a president who will guarantee democracy”.
Speculation has been rife on the make-up of a new government and the possibility of a coalition between Nidaa Tounes and Ennahda in spite of their fundamental differences.

Chattisgarh health minister must be booked for deaths due to negligence

23112014
Aam Aadmi Party demands registration of a criminal case against Chattisgarh health minister for having caused death of atleast 13 women by negligence, and nearly 150 more are still undergoing treatment.
The party also demands that the state’s Raman Singh government should immediately make the entire inquiry report public on how medicines with contents of rat poison were supplied to the medical camps at Bilaspur, and given to the victims.
AAP team led by party’s chief spokesperson Yogendra Yadav and colleagues from the state unit in their on-the-spot assessment has found that the state government acted with extreme negligence, and poor women were treated like guinea pigs by a negligent health regime in the state.
It is extremely surprising that the BJP leadership has allowed an insensitive individual like Mr Amar Agrawal to continue as health minister even two weeks after the terrible incident, particularly after he has been changing his statements to falsely shift blame on the doctors.
The Chattisgarh health minister is neither repentant nor has he assured that such incidents will not be repeated in future.
The probe report has nailed the lies of the state government, which had initially stated that deaths of women had taken place due to negligence of doctors who conducted the sterilisation surgeries earlier this month.
The state government must also reveal whether it has stopped the supplies from the pharmaceutical company which has claimed the lives of innocent women, and whether the state BJP leadership has any link with this company.
Local residents of Bilaspur have informed the AAP leadership that atleast nine women are on ventilators and are struggling for their lives. It is being apprehended that the number of casualties may go up since the medical relief for those still admitted in hospitals due to botched up sterilisation surgeries is far from adequate.
There are many unanswered questions even after two weeks of the man-made tragedy and till the Rama Singh government wakes up from its slumber and heads are rolled, the scope for improvement and corrective action appears remote.

  • Mr Arun Jaitley must clarify on what he means by people like him don’t need LPG subsidy
  • FM’s statement is an indication that the BJP govt is planning to withdraw LPG subsidy

The Aam Aadmi Party demands that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley should give a clarification on his statement on withdrawal of LPG cylinder subsidy.
The Finance Minister has been quoted in the media as saying that “people like him” do not need subsidy and therefore subsidy will be given only to the poor.
This indicates that the government is planning to withdraw LPG subsidy and the Finance Minister is trying to justify the move in advance.
The Aam Aadmi Party demands that Mr Jaitley should clarify what he meant by “people like him”, because he’s the richest minister in the union cabinet with assets on more than Rs 70 crore.
The government must make it clear what will the new income bracket, which will get the subsidy benefit. We warn the government that if the lower middle class is deprived of the benefit, the Aam Aadmi Party will have to take the issue to the streets.
While AAP feels that “people like Mr. Jaitley” with assets of more than Rs 70 crore or a  monthly income of more than Rs 10 lakh really do not need subsidy and the government should first ensure that their diesel guzzling SUVs do not run on subsidized diesel.

BJP govt must stop its immature & amateur interference in school education

The BJP central government must give up its immature and amateur interference in school education since such mid-year tampering will cause immense harm to the students.
The irresponsible utterances of the union human resources development minister make it clear that the BJP government lacks the necessary competence and seriousness required to initiate fresh education reforms.
The central government must allay the fears of students and their parents immediately on the issue of imposition of an extra language when merely three months are left for the final examination and also whether class X exams will be made mandatory for the CBSE students.
The Aam Aadmi Party is of the categorical view that no proposal can be implemented once an academic session has begun and the decision of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan board of directors to replace German with Sanskrit for students of classes VI-VIII at this final juncture is nothing short of playing with the careers of nearly 70,000 students.
It is extremely unfortunate that the HRD minister is trying to give a German Vs Sanskrit narrow twist to the wider issue of three language formula under the National Curriculum Framework.
A balance needs to be struck between classical Indian languages and the growing aspiration among students to learn foreign languages. The decision to impose any particular language and discontinue other languages is a retrograde move, which needs to be discoraged.
The HRD minister Ms Smriti Irani has displayed a complete ignorance of facts by stating that teaching German in schools is unconstitutional. Either she has not been briefed properly by her ministry officials or she is deliberately misleading the country by her misinterpretation of the Constitution.
The government has a complete team of senior law officers whose services can be utilised by the HRD minister to get a proper understanding of the Constitution and interpretation of the relevant schedules dealing with languages taught in India.
The BJP government is playing a dangerous game with school education by trying to impose and rush through ill-thought reforms without consulting experts in the field of education. Such a move could spell disaster for the country.
The AAP demands that the central government must immediately stop its knee jerk announcements on school education and should start consultations to build a national consensus on fresh reforms in education. (ENDS)

Carlsen beats Anand,

Carlsen beats Anand, retains World Chess C’ship title
Carlsen beats Anand, retains World Chess C
Magnus Carlsen asserted his supremacy over Viswanathan Anand for the second year in running as the Norwegian retained his World Championship title after defeating the Indian Challenger in the 11th game, in Sochi, Russia on Sunday. The Norwegian world champion closed the 12-game match with a 6.5-4.5 scoreline, courtesy his win in the penultimate game. While this may have been closely fought in the eyes of the experts, the fact remains that Anand lasted only one extra game compared to the 2013 match at Chennai when it was all over in the tenth game of the match itself.
For Anand, there were a lot of lessons to be learnt and it is clear that the five-time world champion will probably like to get another shy at the title during the next Candidates tournament.
Anand knew that a draw would keep him in the match but expectedly the Indian ace was not hooked to the idea of staying on till the last game of the 12-game match, and tried to complicate when he got the first opportunity.
When Anand went for the real complications the opinion of the experts was pretty divided out of another Berlin defense game. While the opening discussion continued, Anand was the first to deviate from earlier games in the same opening and in the opinion of Ian Nepomniachtchi, a former second of Carlsen, Anand went for unwarranted complexities.
In the 11th game too, Anand made fewer mistakes than Calrsen and some even opined that the Indian had better chance. As it happened in the game, Anand came up with an exchange sacrifice when according to Grandmaster Peter Svidler, ‘he felt he ought to be doing something’.
As things became clear, the exchange sacrifice was probably not the best of solutions for Anand in a seemingly equal situation and this was what eventually plotted the downfall for the Indian, Anand however regretted his decision to sacrifice a rook for a minor piece.
“It was a bad gamble, and I got punished,” he said.
Carlsen on his part remained the calculation machine he is known to be and his super judgement on the position was the critical factor to seize the initiative.
Anand was pretty sure that the position was equal before that but while he was playing objectively till a certain point but took a nervous decision in the match. Anand could have drawn this and gone on in the 12th game of the match in a must-win situation.
Anand conceded after the match that Carlsens nerves held better in this match. But for the experts, it was clear that Anand had his chances which he did not capitalise.
“Taking in to account that all things considered he did better. I did not something better and some things worse,” Anand concluded at the post-game conference.

Obama encourages ‘best and brightest’ to stay in US

Obama encourages
Referring to the innovative and entrepreneurial skills of immigrants, in particular Indians, US President Barack Obama has pushed for immigration reform to encourage the best and the brightest to stay in America and not to return to their home country after completing studies.
“We educate the world’s young people in our universities, and then we just send them home, even if they’re wanting to start a business or they’ve got some specialized skill. We just send them home, and then they compete against us,” Obama said in Las Vegas, a day after he announced a series of executive actions to fix the broken immigration system.
“We should be encouraging the best and the brightest to study here and stay here, and invest here, and create jobs here and businesses here, and industries here.
You look at Silicon Valley – 30, 40 per cent of the companies that we now take for granted that have changed our lives, they were started by immigrants,” Obama said.
“So that’s what this issue is all about. And that’s why it deserves reasoned and thoughtful and compassionate debate. And that’s why we have to focus not on our fears, weve got focus on our hopes,” he said, explaining his executive actions that has benefited some five million undocumented workers, including hundreds and thousands of Indian-Americans, a significant numbers of whom are IT experts.
The executive action, said to be one of the largest measure by a US President on immigration, is expected to help a significant number of Indian techies who currently have to undergo a painful and agonising process of H-1B visas to get legal permanent status (LPR), popularly known as Green Card.
“We’re not a nation that kicks out strivers and dreamers who want to earn their piece of the American Dream. We’re a nation that finds a way to welcome them,” he said, adding “we didn’t raise the Statue of Liberty with her back to the world, we did it with her light shining as a beacon to the world.
Obama’s new executive order, combined with his previous executive order of June 2012, could benefit some 600,000 of the estimated 1.5 million unauthorized Asians in the US, said Indian-American Prakash Khatri, the nation’s first Immigration Ombudsman during President George W Bush’s administration.
“Additionally, as many as 400,000 highly skilled Science Technology Engineering and Math college graduates, mostly from Asia, will benefit from the announced changes,” he said.
The South Asian Bar Association also welcomed the executive actions of Obama on immigration. “We welcome these changes and applaud President Obama for his attention to this issue,” said SABA North America president Mansi Shah.
“President Obama new declaration about immigration reforms is a very welcome move and he did this what he promised with the people of United States during his election,” said North American Punjabi Association.

Talk: The River Plate Culture”Synopsis: For some time now, the literary world has been spoken about the culture of the countries surrounding the River Plate, a river as wide as a sea, which is shared by Argeninians and Uruguayans like brothers, in a peacefull way.
Since 1800 the politics of the harbours were getting closer and further both sides, but in some way they were allways creating a similar culture and way of life. This new culture fed from European traditions from Spain, France, England, also from the US and even Jew tradition, mixing it all with the native background: the original indigenous culture, the colonial legacy and the black race contributions.
The famous River Plate sadness in expressed in the popular music Tango, shared by the two countries, as the exalted nostalgia of a land where they never lived, but that gave shape to the intellectual brain and feelings of the people in the River Plate’s banks.

‘Historical Fiction and the Questions of Sovereignty:
Aesthetic form and memory making in early twentieth century Travancore’

by

Prof. Udaya Kumar,
NMML.

This paper considers the fictional and political writings of C. V. Raman Pillai (1858-1922, widely known as C. V.), whose trilogy of historical romances Marthandavarma (1891), Dharmaraja (1913), and Ramarajabahadur(1918-19) presented celebratory accounts of two eighteenth century Kings of Travancore Marthandavarma (reg. 1729-58) and Ramavarma (reg. 1758-98). In the two decades that separated his first two novels, C. V. published several essays of political criticism under the title Videshiyamedhavitvam (Foreign Rule) opposing the appointment of non-native Brahmins as Dewans of Travancore. Although his three historical romances were ostensibly focused on Travancore Kings, C. V. saw Dharmarajaand Ramarajabahadur as the first two novels in a planned trilogy on the eighteenth century Nayar Dewan Kesava Pillai (1745-99), better known as “Raja Kesavadas” after an honorific conferred on him by the British. In addition to this shift in focus from the King to the Nayar Minister, a new level of complexity is found in C. V.’s fiction in its recurrent, obsessive preoccupation with a family of rebel Nayarchiefs (Madampimar) who rise from the ashes, novel after novel, to confront royal power. While images of Nayar loyalty, valour and governance appear as direct objects of celebration, the novels also manifest a subterranean strain of heroic mourning for forms of Nayar power destroyed by Marthandavarma’s consolidation of the Travancore state. The paper argues that tensions between these two configurations of sovereignty underlay C. V.’s fictional and political projects. In his historical romances, through a deft use of stylized narration and visual and performance schema drawn from classical and folk traditions from the region, C. V. created modes of characterisation and discourse that brought together praise and mourning, Nayar assertion and ritualised royal acclamation. The paper analyses some aspects of the aesthetic-political work performed in C. V.’s historical novels.

Researchers find Nehru’s birth mystery of Mathura connection, which is lost in oblivion.
125th birth anniversary invites research and quarries.
Biography writers also missed this chapter of Mathura,
The flagbearer of world peace, architect of the nation and the first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru although enjoyed hundreds of the books on his personality and contributions in many fields at national and international level but unfortunately not even a single one could reveal the facts belonging to religious rituals performed by his father Pandit Motilal Nehru at Mathura with a desire to have a son.
The mystery was revealed by Dr. S. C. Sharma in a meeting held at Vishram Ghat in Mathura to celebrate children’s day under the aegis of Dr. R. C. Sharma Memorial Research & Welfare Institute. Dr. Sharma, the researcher  told that when Pandit Motilal Nehru had been wandering with the grief of  not having the son, he performed religious rituals in 1888 at Mathura on the suggestions of his guru and purohit of Kashmiri pandits Bankali Chaubey.
It was a coincidence that after ten months of the rituals Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14th November 1889 in Prayag. Dr. Sharma told further that Pandit Motilal Nehru was so overwhelmed with the miracle of the ritual that he immediately ordered for building Govardhan Nath temple at Vishram Ghat in Mathura. Simultaneously he also got a dharmashala to be built for Kashmiri pilgrims visiting Mathura nearby same area in Maru gali.  The construction of either of these monumental works were put under the charge of his elder brother Bansidhar Nehru and munshi Mubarak Ali.
Dr. Sharma raised the question that biography writers of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru never penned the Mathura chapter in spite of knowing the coexistence of the relationship between the successors of Bankali Chaubey and Mrs Indira Gandhi.

Even the eminent writers like B. R. Nanda, S. Gopalakrishnan and M. J. Akbar couldn’t illustrate the reality although they painted fancy and colorful depictions of Motilal Nehru’s wandering to have a son based on people’s hearsay.
If we believe the story narrated by present descendants of Bankali Chaubey “ Most of the documents lying with us provide the information about Pandit Motilal Nehru and after in order that earlier documents in Persian are neither legible to us nor any oral information is available from tradition.” said Ravinndra Nath.

Moreover, family history written by Bansidhar Nehru and popularized by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru explains that first known ancestor Raj Kaul left the divine valley in 1712 in search of fortunes in the plains. His two sons Mauzaram Nehru and Laxmidhar Nehru attained tremendous name and fame in East India Company and Mughal court together. And Gangadhar Nehru the successor of Laxmidhar Nehru became the kotwal of Delhi during the reign of last Mughal emperor Bahadurshah Zafar II. Meanwhile the ferocious storm of 1857 uprooted Mughal as well as Nehru dynasty from Delhi.
Thus Nehru family moved towards Agra via Mathura under the patronage of Gangadhar Nehru. In Agra Bansidhar Nehru joined the court as judgement writer and Nandlal became a teacher to Khetri ruler. Gangadhar Nehru passed away in adverse circumstances at the age of 34 and after his demise Pandit Motilal Nehru was born on 6th May 1861 in Agra.
Before beginning the programme the people gathered at the occasion offered flowered to Ma Yamuna and Pt J. L. Nehru followed by slogans like Bharat Mata Ki Jai . Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Amar Rahen. At this occasion  Ravindra Nath Chaturvedi, Biharilal Chaturvedi, Badam Chaturvedi, Bali Chaturvedi, Yogendra Chaturvedi, Ravindra Yadav, Sandip Yadav, Mansola ji etc were present.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today highlighted the strength of media, and the positive role it could play in transforming society.

Speaking at the Inauguration of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of the Assam Tribune, the Prime Minister expressed his views on how journalism should be in today`s world. He said the choice before the media was to like a fly or like a bee. A bee hovers on flowers and produces honey, but can also sting sharply if required, the Prime Minister said. He said that such journalism, which carries the strength and qualities of a honey bee, has been a force for good of people.

The Prime Minister said he is fortunate to be among those who demonstrate the power of the pen, and show how it can be the vital life-force and conscience of society.

He said newspapers not just give news, but also mould our thinking and open a window to the world. In a broader context, media is a means of transforming society, he added.

The Prime Minister appreciated the founder editor of the Assam Tribune, Shri RG Baruah, for his zeal and commitment in launching and running the newspaper in the most adverse circumstances. He said Mr. Baruah had shown his commitment to social causes, by helping create sports infrastructure and showing the world the beauty of Assam`s Bihu festival, and Assamese music. Else, how would India have got the opportunity to appreciate and admire Bhupen Hazarika, he added. He also said the Assam Tribune has managed to gain the trust of the people of Assam over the last 75 years.

The Prime Minister also referred to the trend of the media of quoting "reliable sources." He said he would prefer a newspaper which quoted "reliable sources" least often, as quoting sources lowers the credibility of the publication.

The Prime Minister said media must reflect on how media can strengthen the society and how media can use modern technology towards this end.

The Prime Minister also released a souvenir on the occasion.

the Chief Minister of Assam Shri Tarun Gogoi, the MoS (IC) Sports Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, the MoS Home Shri Kiren Rijiju, and the Editor-Chairman of the Assam Tribune Shri PG Baruah were present on the occasion.
